Oia is the epitome of all villages of Santorini. Known for the fantastic sunset, it is situated on top of an impressive cliff and offers spectacular views over the volcano. With charming houses in narrow streets, blue-domed churches, and sun-bathed verandas, it is deemed the most beautiful and picturesque place in Santorini. Many artists fell in love with the area and settled there, that’s why you will find so many art galleries.

Oia was inhabited by the poorest islanders until 1956 when a catastrophic earthquake changed the landscape and most of the houses which were made of stone and mud collapsed. It took about ten years for the village of Oia to be reconstructed with stronger materials and for the electricity to finally arrive. Moreover, the construction of the airport in 1976, helped the island to overcome the disaster and start receiving tourists from all over the world, to become a few years later the top destination in Greece.
