Our visit to Nafpaktos (Lepanto), one of the ancient cities in Greece, will leave us with unforgettable impressions. It is characterized as a traditional settlement because its castle starts from the harbor and reaches very high on the pine-covered hill. Worldwide known for its Naval battle, in 1571, between the Ottoman and the Christian fleet. Admiral of the latter, Michael Cervantes, author of Don Quixote.
Each year, at the beginning of October, the Naval Battle is being re-enacted and at the same time, a memorial is held to those who lost their lives. That is why every Holy & Good Friday, a multitude of candles sail in the calm sea, reminding the pilgrims of the sacrifice of Christ at the Calvary. However, in Nafpaktos (Lepanto), above all, we praise peace, life, acceptance of others, and freedom.
One lovely thing about Nafpaktos is that it combines the sea, the low land, and the mountain. A best-kept secret. At the magnificent Botsari’s Tower, there is a unique exhibition Center of the Naval Battle of Lepanto (Nafpaktos), with paintings on this great event.
